Palazzo del Turismo, RiccioneThe presence of organized crime in Emilia-Romagna is a matter of fact. From Reggio Emilia to the Adriatic Coast, mafia infiltrations are a deep-rooted phenomenon, even though they are barely evident to citizens. The purpose of this workshop is to address the phenomenon by focusing on the fundamental value of investigative journalism and sociological research. A case history is represented by ‘Segnali di mafia. Immagini della presenza mafiosa in Emilia-Romagna’ (Mafia Signals. Images of the Mafia’s Circulation in Emilia-Romagna), a project born from a collaboration between the University of Bologna and the Region Emilia-Romagna, under the coordination of sociologist Marco Santoro. The project also resulted in the creation of ‘E.R. Connection”, a documentary film directed by Paolo Angelini and written by Marco Santoro and Marco Solaroli. Starting from these experiences, the workshop will teach how to map organized crime trough field research, using ethnographic methods and interview techniques. And it will also reveal how difficult is to investigate mafia’s activities in Northern Italy.
